It’s that time of year again. The season of the South Swell. And while this might be good news for all the surfers out there who can now walk right out their front door to catch a wave here on the West Side, it’s not so great for us snorkelers. The same waves that are great for surfing make snorkeling a lot less fun, and a lot more dangerous. Luckily, there is a solution. The island of Maui just happens to have an old volcanic crater just a boat-ride away that is almost always an amazing snorkeling destination. Because of the craters shape, the inside is very well protected and therefore stays calm and clear. Because it is also a nature preserve, there are always many types of fish and sea-life for snorkelers to see.
There are plenty of snorkel tours you can take to get to Molokini; you can take a sailboat, a catamaran or even a hard bottom raft. Our favorite boat here at Boss Frog’s is the Calypso. This 55′ catamaran leaves out of Maalaea Harbor at 7:30am and goes to both Molokini Crater and Turtle Town. It includes a continental breakfast of fresh fruit, pastries, coffee, tea and juice, and also includes all of your snorkel gear. There is also a veggie platter to munch on after the first snorkel stop and a nice deli sandwich lunch to include cookies and beverages.
If you are new to snorkeling, don’t worry, the Calypso crew will take good care of you. Before you even get in the water, they will help you get your gear ready and give you a basic lesson. Once you’re in the water, they will be right there with you in case you need help adjusting your mask or need an extra flotation device. One of the reasons the Quicksilver is our favorite Molokini trip, is because it is one of the fastest catamarans on Maui. That means you will get to and from the snorkel sites faster and get more time in the water with the fish and turtles!
The Calypso does fill up a few days in advance so call ahead to make reservations. Our knowledgeable staff can also answer any questions you have about this or any of the other Maui activities. (808) 661-3333
