The best places to learn to surf near Lahaina
Maui receives some of the most consistent swell in the world, making it one of the best places to learn to surf. We love surfing at Launiupoko Beach Park near Lahaina. It is very possible to paddle out without getting your hair wet (around the breaking waves) and catch long, small waves all the way to shore. Be careful of coral and urchins, here. When you fall, stay horizontal and consider reef booties. For more information on surfing at Luniupoko, check out our blog.
Choosing the right board for your skill level
While we carry both long boards and short boards at our west side locations, the ideal board for you will depend on your level of experience. Soft tops are the ideal board for beginners just learning to pop up and ride a wave. They are super buoyant and easy to paddle but can be a bit challenging to navigate in larger swell. Once you’ve progressed, you can upgrade to a long board. From there, a short board can get you into larger waves and provide more maneuverability to perfect your turns.
Surf Accessories
We’ve got them all! Rent a GoPro to capture cool content and make your friends at home super jealous. Protect your skin with a rash guard and reef safe sunscreen. Reduce the slip factor of your board with surf wax. Rent a beach chair, cooler and umbrella for post surf chill.
