Directions and Parking: From Kona Town, go south on Ali’i Drive for 4.6 miles (that’s to the left, when you’re facing the ocean). The parking area is just beyond Kahalu’u Beach Park. At the intersection of Ali’i Drive and Makolea Street, turn right to find the parking lot. You’ll also see a Shoreline Access sign and a bright yellow gate. If you arrive in the afternoon, you can send the rest of the family to set up on the sand while you wait for a space! For your convenience, restrooms are located at both ends of Kahalu’u Beach Park.

Kahalu’u Beach Park has every facility imaginable, so it is easy to enjoy an entire day here. Perhaps most importantly, lifeguards are stationed at this beach. If you have any questions about the day’s ocean conditions, where is it best to swim, and what to look out for, these folks are the ones to ask. Several food trucks parked next to the beach serve a variety of ono grinds (that’s pidgin for “delicious food”), so your stomach is sure to be taken care of. Two sets of restrooms are just off the sand, along with trash cans, picnic tables, grills for cooking, and plenty of shade. Reef experts are on hand to enthusiastically explain the ecosystem to visitors of all ages. The water at Kahalu’u Beach is shallow and usually calm. And although we wouldn’t call a fish a facility, once you’re in the water, no matter which way you swim, you’ll see something beautiful!
