Has a surf trip to Maui been on your bucket list, but you’re worried about the cost? While Hawaii has a reputation for being pricey, catching waves in paradise doesn’t have to drain your wallet. With a little planning, you can turn your dream Maui surf trip into reality—without the hefty price tag. From renting boards instead of buying to choosing the most accessible surf spots and budget-friendly accommodations, we’ll show you how to plan the best cheap surf trip to Hawaii.

Renting a Surf Board Vs. Buying

When it comes to surf gear, renting is the way to go! Instead of spending hundreds on a board you’ll have to lug around plus flight fees, Boss Frog’s offers high-quality surfboard rentals on Maui at a fraction of the cost. Rates start at $24 per day! Plus, their expert team will help you choose the perfect board for your skill level and current conditions. Whether you’re in Maui for a few days or a few weeks, renting gives you the flexibility to swap boards based on the swell, your progression, or just to try something new.

Budget Friendly Accommodations for a Cheap Surf Trip to Hawaii

Renting a condo with a kitchen on Maui’s south or west side is another smart way to save money. You’ll be close to top surf spots like The Cove and Honolua Bay. Plus, having a kitchen helps cut food costs. Let’s be real—poke bowls add up fast! Cooking some of your own meals will save budget on one of the most expensive parts of your surf trip.

For the adventurous traveler, camping is the cheapest way to stay on Maui. You can rent camping gear or even a camper van/truck stocked with everything you’ll need. This lets you chase waves without being tied to one location…freedom baby.

If you want more comfort without the resort price tag, glamping at Camp Olowalu is a unique option. You’ll stay in a cozy tent with a real bed, just steps from the ocean. No need to set up camp—just show up and enjoy. Plus, it’s perfectly located between Lahaina’s surf breaks like Guardrails and Launiupoko and the long breaks at Thousand Peaks and Ukumehame.

Best Surf Spots On Maui

If you’re learning to surf on Maui, The Cove in Kihei is the perfect place to start. It’s small, rolling waves make it ideal for practicing your pop-up and working on your form. Plus, it’s within walking distance of many vacation rentals. If you stay nearby, you might not even need to rent a car—saving you a ton of money! Other great beginner-friendly spots include Ukumehame and Launiupoko on the west side. Both have soft, forgiving waves. Just be sure to check conditions before paddling out.

For intermediate surfers, summer (May–September) is the best time to surf west and south Maui. South swells bring fun, consistent waves. In winter (November–March), the north shore shows up with powerful north swells. Winter swells create bigger, faster waves, perfect for those looking to level up.

For advanced surfers, Ho‘okipa on the north shore is the go-to spot. It delivers world-class waves and heavy conditions. If you’re chasing giant surf or just want to observe one of the most famous waves in Hawaii, Pe‘ahi (Jaws) has some of the biggest waves on the planet. Unless you’re a HIGHLY seasoned big-wave rider, it’s best to watch from the cliffs!

No matter your skill level, there’s a perfect wave waiting for you. Just remember to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette.

Surfing For All Skill Levels At The Cove

Renting a surfboard from Boss Frog’s beach rentals in Kihei made my surf session at The Cove effortless. They had both longboards and shortboards available for rent at super affordable prices. Since the waves were small that day, I opted for an 8-foot longboard for easier rides. The team set me up with wax, a GoPro to capture the action, and easy-to-use board straps for our rental car. For travelers driving a vehicle without a roof rack, these straps are a game-changer. They fit any car and make it easy to transport a board without hassle.

Arriving at The Cove, I paddled out and caught a few fun waves. The waves are typically super mellow and beginner-friendly, and the small cove provides protection from the wind and undercurrents. While I didn’t take advantage of Boss Frog’s surf lessons, it’s great knowing that option is available for anyone looking to fine-tune their surf skills!

Planning a cheap surf trip to Hawaii is easier than you might think. With so many affordable housing options you can customize your trip to fit your budget. And when it comes to surf gear, renting from a local shop like Boss Frog’s makes it even more convenient and affordable. So pack your bags, grab a board, and get ready to surf Maui’s world famous waves!
