Boss Frog's Snorkeling Summary
Coral Gardens is a big, beautiful, west coast reef system beginning about 20 yards offshore from the Pali Highway. Because you can't reach the site comfortably without a boat, there are a large variety of fish there. Maui winds increase as the day goes on, so Coral Gardens is a perfect site for afternoon snorkelers, as the area is usually sheltered from the winds. The trip over from Ma'alaea Harbor is lovely, and throughout whale season, you are almost sure to spot some humpback whales on the way.
Here you are sure to see trumpetfish, butterflyfish, parrotfish, peacock grouper, yellow tang, spotted tobies, Achilles' tang, unicornfish, chubs, Moorish idols, and many other species. There is also a good chance for you to spot octopus, eels, and bluefin trevally here.
Your boat crew will explain the coolest ways to enter the water from your boat. Have an awesome time! Once you're finished (pau in Hawaiian), you can rinse off with the freshwater showers provided and grab some lunch that's being served up by the crew. Yum, yum!
