There is good snorkeling along the left side of Maluaka Beach. You are sure to witness the usual interesting marine suspects, including sea urchins, butterflyfish, and coronetfish. If you and your buddy are strong swimmers and advanced snorkelers, there is even better snorkeling if you swim farther out and to the left of the beach. Exploring right next to the coast around that point is definitely enticing, as well. If you go there, make sure not to get stuck in the shallows. Imagine: you are floating practically weightless, and then suddenly you’re picked up by a wave and deposited atop a lava outcropping – and its resident sea urchins. This writer experienced such a moment during a lapse in attention, and she would rather you did not have to do the same. (Waiting weeks for sea urchin spines to dissolve beneath one’s skin can be fairly uncomfortable.)

When you are out of the water, Maluaka Beach can provide some great fun. There are barbeque grills and a picnic table, a nice green lawn, and more grains of sand than you can count! Be ready with a football to toss or a frisbee to throw. And before you get there, we suggest considering potential architectural designs for the sand castles you may want to build. Have a great time!
